   I’d like to know what the status of this bill is. I realize that the legislative process is “cumbersome” and am wondering if anyone can project when it might come up for a vote. Also, is there a risk of a presidential veto if it should make it through congress? Would there be any advantage to waiting to adnance this bill until we have a new (and improved) president and congress or can the process start over again if it should fail now?

   This bill has been introduced in the House and a companion bill was introduced in the Senate. While advocates, activists, college students and low-income women were hopeful that HR 4054 would be either passed by itself or after being incorporated into other pieces of legislation before the New Year, those efforts fell by the wayside. Dawna Cornilessen of RH Reality check outlined what’s happened in her blog.

   As far as waiting goes, no matter what the current President would do, this issue shouldn’t wait. I would encourage you to contact your Representative and Senators and tell them it’s time to move on the Prevention through Affordable Access Act. At this point, it doesn’t matter what the President would do because the bill isn’t on the way to his desk. Should he decide to veto the legistlation, it could then go back to the House and the Senate for a veto override. It would be up the Leadership of each house whether or not to schedule it for the override. If the bill were to fail this session, it could be reintroduced in future sessions.
